8.7. Replacement of back brake shoes on drum brakes

GENERAL INFORMATION

Prevention

Surely you make replacement of all blocks on one axis of the car even if the limit of wear was reached by one block. If blocks are repeatedly established, before removal mark them.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Remove the brake drum.
2. Observing care and security measures, clear all traces of brake dust from the brake drum, a brake board and blocks.
3. Measure thickness of overlays of brake shoes in several points. If at least one block is worn-out in any place to the minimum thickness, replace all four brake shoes.
4. Note the adjusting provision of all elements of a back brake.
5. Using flat-nose pliers, disconnect the top returnable spring of brake shoes.
6. Disconnect the fixing spring of the lever of a forward block and remove the fixing spring, the lever and a returnable spring from a brake shoe, noting their arrangement.
7. Remove in turn the top ends of brake shoes and take an adjusting level.
8. Using flat-nose pliers, remove a plate of a spring of fixing of a block, pressing a plate and turning it on 90 °.
9. Remove a spring and take clamp pins.
10. Separate a front brake shoe from the lower returnable spring and remove a brake shoe and a returnable spring.
11. Using flat-nose pliers, remove on a back brake shoe a plate of a spring of fixing of a block, pressing a plate and turning it on 90 °. Remove a spring and take clamp pins. Remove a cable of the emergency brake from a brake shoe.
12. Do not remove at the same time brake shoes of the left and right back wheel not to mix a detail of brake shoes. Cores with a carving of adjusting levels of the left and right wheel are noted by the letters L or R, and other details are identified in color: black for the left side and silvery for the right side.
13. Sort and clear an adjusting level. The arrow designated a thermal clip.
14. Check a condition of returnable springs and, if necessary, replace them.
15. If on new brake shoes there is no control lever of the emergency brake, remove it from old brake shoes and establish on new. Fix a hinged finger of a control lever of the emergency brake by a spring ring (it is specified by an arrow).
16. Apply a thin film of high-temperature lubricant on places of contact of brake shoes and a brake board.
17. Connect a cable of the emergency brake to the lever on a back brake shoe.
18. Establish a block clamp pin, a spring and a plate of fastening of a spring on a back brake shoe.
19. Establish the lower returnable spring on a back brake shoe and connect a spring to a front brake shoe.
20. Establish a front brake shoe on a brake board (a photo at the left), insert a block clamp pin, a spring and a plate of fastening of a spring (a photo on the right).
21. Collect an adjusting level for what screw an adjusting wheel on a regulator bolt so that between a wheel and a head of a bolt there was a small gap. Insert a regulator bolt into an adjusting level.
22. Establish an adjusting level between brake shoes. Check that both ends of an adjusting level are correctly established on brake shoes. At the same time longer end of a fork of an adjusting level has to be directed to a brake board.
23. Connect a returnable spring of the adjusting lever to a forward block and the adjusting lever and install the lever on a hinged finger. Fix the adjusting lever by the fixing spring.
24. Check that the top parts of brake shoes are correctly installed in the piston of the working brake cylinder and establish the top returnable spring.
25. Check that the reference point of a stop of the lever of the emergency brake is established against edge of a brake shoe, then install the brake drum.
26. Make replacement of brake shoes on the second back wheel.
27. After replacement of brake shoes adjust a gap between them and the brake drum for what 20–25 times press a brake pedal. When pressing a pedal during the normal work of an adjusting level the clicks published by an adjusting level have to be heard.
28. Check and if it is necessary, adjust the emergency brake.
29. Check the level of brake fluid in system.
